Why most homesteaders fail (and how you can succeed)

I've watched too many people give up on their homestead dreams.

Not because they weren't capable or committed—but because they were missing a strategic framework.

They'd start with so much excitement. Buy the land. Make big plans. Then a year later? Exhausted, overwhelmed, sometimes broke, wondering what went wrong.

The pattern was always the same:

- Building everything at once (chaos instead of progress).

- Ignoring the economics (running out of money before systems could produce).

- Following conflicting advice (paralyzed by too many voices).

- Prioritizing nothing (spreading energy too thin to succeed at anything).

What I learned volunteering across Europe  for years changed everything for me:

The homesteaders who were actually thriving—the ones who seemed energized instead of drained—weren't working harder than everyone else.

They were thinking differently.

They prioritized foundations that everything else depended on. They designed their food systems using effective design that eliminated wasted cost and energy . They built in strategic phases, not all at once.

When we started our Estonian homestead, I applied these frameworks from day one.

Five and a half years into our debt-free homestead journey, we have year-round food coming from the garden, we've set up a few incomestreams that complement each other, and have builded affordable natural buildings—and the most important thing: we're not exhausted by it, but actually enjoy the process.

The homesteads that last aren't built on grinding harder—they're built on thinking strategically.

And that? That's completely learnable.

Hey there!

My name is Laura.

I've been dreaming of this life since I was 14—after experiencing an off grid lifestyle in a yurt in the Belgian forest, I felt like I'd glimpsed something true. The conventional path never felt right after that.

So I spent my twenties wandering—volunteering on farms across Europe, sleeping in barns, learning from people who'd figured out how to live differently. I got my Permaculture Design Certificate in Portugal. I made a lot of mistakes in Belgium trying to grow food in my grandparents garden. I slowly learned that romantic ideals don't feed you—strategic systems do.

Now I'm here in Estonia with my partner and our daughter, living the dream I've been building toward for a decade. Our garden feeds us year-round. Our guest cabin brings in income. I make art in my studio. Our daughter plays in the garden. It's not perfect, but it's real.

And I'm here to show you it's possible for you too—not through copying my exact path, but through understanding the frameworks that make any homestead work.
